Kaopectate for dogs is a drug that is used to treat mild diarrhea. Even though it is also known as kaolin or pectin, several newer formulas do not use or contain kaolin or pectin as the active ingredients anymore, but replace it with attapulgite instead. The label name has stayed the same somewhat, and people mostly just refer it as Kaopectate. This medication is a mild antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and antacid medication that’s given to human as well to cure diarrhea and indigestion. Note that FDA has not approved the use for canine pets even though some vets may prescribe it.

You can find Kaopectate for dogs as an OTC drug without the need of prescription, but it is always better to consult with your vet before giving any drug to your pets, especially if they have taken any other medicationa at the same time. The typically acceptable dosage of Kaopectate for pets is between 0.5 to 1 ml per pound of their body weight. It may be administered 4-6 times a day, depending on its active ingredient and the concentration – an important reason why it is highly advisable to ask to your vet before giving this drug.


Side effects

Kaopectate for dogs side effects are usually mild and rare to be found. However, it may still bring fever, abdominal pain, fatigue, dizziness, lethargy, dark stool, and increased thirst. Constipation may occur if your pet is exposed to high doses. Different variations in formula and concentration could lead to different problems.

One last thing to keep in mind, Kaocpetate carries risk of allergic, just like any other drugs do. If your pet is allergic to aspirin, NSAIDS, or steroids, it is not recommended to take this medication. The allergy reaction may lead to life-threatening condition like anaphylaxis.
